Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, a member of the State System of Higher Education, was founded in 1866 as Keystone State Normal School, became Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928, Kutztown State College in 1960, and achieved university status in 1983.  Today, Kutztown University is a modern, comprehensive institution and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the Pennsylvania Department of Education, NCATE, NLNAC, CSWE, NCACE, NASM, and NASAD.  Additionally, KU has received candidacy approval from AACSB.


Enrollment
Approximately 10,700 full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. Most are Pennsylvania residents: 60% women, 40% men.

Academic Year
Two 15-week terms and two summer sessions.

Special Academic Programs
Honors Program throughout the undergraduate curriculum, international exchange and study abroad programs, freshmen seminars, independent study, internships, diversified and intensive academic support services.

Faculty
Teaching-focused, with scholarly expertise; many are engaged in research, student/faculty research, writing, and consulting. 82% have their terminal degree. We have a student/faculty ratio of 20:1.

Library
A modern, spacious facility with wireless Internet access throughout the building; more than 555,000 books and bound periodicals; over 43,000 print and electronic periodical subscriptions; 100 databases providing access to hundreds of thousands of e-books, documents, reports, and images; more than one million microforms; maps, videos and DVDs; state-of-the-art computer facilities; study rooms; computer and AV equipment loans; network connections throughout. 

Special Facilities
Wireless campus with gallery, planetarium, observatory, TV production facilities, radio station, more than 50 computer labs containing 1,500 PC's/Mac's, cartography lab, smart classrooms, curriculum materials center, Ronald R. Rhein Environmental Study Area, Pennsylvania Cultural German Heritage Center, Wallops Island marine science consortium facility in Virginia.

Student Life
One hundred sixty student organizations include: advisory councils, academic, campus media, diversified interest, Greek, performing arts, public service, residency issues, social justice, spiritual, special interest, sports (club and recreation) and visual arts affiliates; plus musical entertainment, dances, lectures, comedy, excursions and cultural events. The Student Union houses the bookstore, movie theater, snack bar, TV lounge, coffeehouse, financial center and cyberlounge.

Housing and Residential Services
Fourteen residence facilities (10 coed, one single gender, three modified coed) that include three apartment-style, two suite-style, and nine traditional; accommodate 4,400 students. All residence halls are wired for cable TV, telephone, Internet and campus network access.

Athletics
Eight men's intercollegiate sports (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and wrestling) and 13 women's sports (basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, volleyball, lacrosse, and bowling); extensive intramural and club programs; athletic facilities include swimming pool, football stadium, field house, fitness rooms, playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, indoor and outdoor track, cross-country course. A recreation center houses a snack bar, racquetball courts, gymnasiums, circuit training and a rock climbing wall. Member NCAA Division II, PSAC.

Financial Aid
Approximately 75% of students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, loans, or student employment.

Alumni
75% of alumni live in Pennsylvania.
