2024 SUMMER INSTITUTES

The Summer Institutes for Art Educators are held in the summer months that correspond to public school summer vacation schedules. The Institutes provide intensive one to two-week instruction in art education and related fields of study. The Institutes connect students with community resources and visiting artists/scholars.  The Institutes are designed to provide in-depth experiences that are unavailable through regular coursework.

Community of Care: Social Emotional Growth in Art Settings

Caring in, with, and through, the arts can be intentional, purposeful, and foundational. This Institute is designed to offer four days of concentrated artistic exploration on the role art education could play in fostering climates of care and relationships supportive of social and emotional learning in art settings. The content is appropriate for and adaptable to all ages, pre-K through adult learners. On-site workshops will meet from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday on June 24^th, 25^th, 26^th, and 27^th in the Sharidan Arts Building. The Institute offers Act 48 credits for completion. An optional three-credit asynchronous online course will build on the work from the Institute from June 28^th through July 19^th. Class enrollment is limited to 15 students. Limited enrollment for Act 48 noncredit students.

In this institute, learners will use collage and assemblage to reinforce memory, create connection, and foster belonging. Participants will piece together various engaging and artistic encounters and strategies as their colleagues and students create collages and assemblages. The work will be layered with meaning and filled with purpose. Learners will recollect, affix, link, fasten, bridge, and secure while considering inclusivity and memory-making. Through art encounters and other unique experiences, educators gain the concrete skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to help them construct, co-construct, and transform curricula, teaching, and learning. The shared content and strategies are appropriate for and adaptable to all ages, Pre-K through adult learners. The institute features workshops, projects, presenters, and a field trip to bolster pedagogy. The onsite workshop/institute will take place July 15th through July 18th and offers Act 48 credits for completion. The 3-credit asynchronous online course, which runs from July 19th through August 8th, builds on the patchwork pedagogy presented in the institute.

Transformative Justice and Community Building Through Storytelling Summer Institute experience focuses on actionable social change through art studio practice and education. The four-week intensive course will be during Summer Session I, June 3rd-June 21st. Two weeks are online, and one-week is in person. The reflexive online component will include readings, films, journal prompts, CR-SE standard requirements, and resources for curricular and learning implementations. The on-site in-person one-week ACT 48 Credit summer institute experience during June 17th, 18th, 20th,& 21st, 2024, between 9am-4pm, will focus on studio arts practice and participatory community building. We will screen the new film, Pardon Me with director and creator, Shuja Moore and through Connection Works offer free Pardon Coach training and certification. Artists talks and studio workshops include working with regional artists and field trips centering community building efforts and care ethics.
