KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University is proud to host an engaging and interactive lecture by Dr. Wing Hong Tony Wong, professor of Mathematics, for Kutztown University’s Spring 2024 Chambliss Faculty Lecture 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 183 McFarland Student Union. In addition to the in-person event, this year’s Chambliss lecture will be available as a webinar on Zoom and will be uploaded to YouTube following the event.
Wong’s lecture is titled “Get a Taste of Mathematical Research,” which will discuss how to conduct mathematical research. The audience will have the opportunity to work and think like a mathematician by exploring a problem in number theory.
Since joining Kutztown University in 2013, Wong has distinguished himself not only as a passionate educator, but also as a prolific researcher within the discrete mathematics community. His innovative work has earned him widespread recognition, including the prestigious John P. Schellenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, the 40 Under 40 Award by the Reading Eagle, the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Society of Leadership and Success and the Early Career Teaching Award from the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Section of the Mathematical Association of America.
Wong’s research is notably extensive, with 21 publications across five distinct fields: combinatorics, blockchain economy, game theory, graph theory and number theory. His groundbreaking paper, "Covering systems with odd moduli," was honored with the Editors’ Choice Award 2023, distinguishing it as one of the most outstanding contributions to the field of Discrete Mathematics in 2022.
Beyond his academic achievements, Wong actively contributes to the mathematical community through various leadership roles. He has served as co-chief organizer for significant conferences and sessions, including a special session on Graph Theory at the 2018 Fall Eastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the 2015 PASSHE-Mathematics Association Conference. His commitment to fostering understanding and appreciation of mathematics extends beyond the academic realm, engaging audiences at local, national and international levels.
In his upcoming lecture, Wong will demystify the process of mathematical investigation, making it accessible to all attendees regardless of their background in mathematics. Through a dynamic and interactive format, he will guide the audience through the explorative and collaborative nature of solving mathematical problems, emphasizing the joy and curiosity that drive the discipline.
