Anthes Named Assistant Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University has appointed Madeline Anthes as assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Anthes joins KU after serving for 11 years at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and will assume her new role at KU Monday, Dec. 4.

“Madeline has an impressive background working directly with students; and her experience with various retention initiatives will be invaluable,” said Dr. Laurie McMillan, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “She is well-prepared to collaborate effectively with the Office of Student Success and Academic Excellence, the Registrar's Office, Admissions, Financial Aid and CLAS departments to assist in recruiting and retaining students by eliminating barriers, enhancing access, addressing concerns and connecting students to resources.”

Anthes served at TCNJ since 2012. In her most recent role as associate director of Student Success in the Center for Student Success, Anthes was responsible for hiring and training all staff, spearheading the creation of the new undeclared major and coaching students in academic skills such as time management, study skills, motivation, goal setting and notetaking.

Anthes was previously a program coordinator at TCNJ, where she developed, oversaw and implemented the psychology department’s four-year advising sequence. Her primary responsibilities included scheduling courses for students each semester, supervising operations of the psychology department office and assisting the chair with major projects.

Anthes also has previous teaching experience. At TCNJ, she taught courses such as First Year Seminar, First Year Writing and advising courses for undeclared students.

“I’m thrilled to join Kutztown University and work with students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” Anthes said. “I look forward to collaborating with faculty and staff to create pathways for student success and be part of such a vibrant campus community.”

Anthes earned her bachelor’s degree in English and history from Denison University. She went on to earn two graduate degrees from Arcadia University: a Master of Arts in English and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing (fiction).

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has 13 academic departments that offer dynamic programs where students pursue their passions and engage in learning experiences that propel them into meaningful careers. In addition to coursework that helps students develop key foundational skills and in-depth disciplinary knowledge, many students take advantage of internships, research opportunities and study abroad. The strength of all the programs of the college lies in a dedicated faculty who have a passion for teaching and mentoring that touches students' minds as well as their lives.

Departments within the college include anthropology and sociology, biological sciences, computer science and information technology, criminal justice, English, geography, history, mathematics, modern language studies, philosophy and government, physical sciences, psychology and social work.
