Open Education Week: An Opportunity to Collaborate Locally and GloballyIn 2018, librarians and faculty at Millersville University collaborated to deliver 7 online webinars during Open Education Week. Our faculty presented about various aspects of Open Education using online teleconferencing software. The sessions, promoted by Open Education Consortium were attended by educators from around the world. The experience working together has resulted in continued collaborations between the faculty and librarians involved including additional conference presentations and grant proposals. We'll share about our experience co-leading the group and the positive outcomes form the join efforts in promoting awareness about Open Education.
Michele Mislevy | Albright College
Road Trip: Navigating to the OER SuperhighwayThere have been some bumps in merging onto the OER superhighway, but successes in the School of Professional Studies (SPS) project inspired faculty in the traditional program to explore and implement OER/ no-cost/ low cost text alternatives. This session will recount Albright College's tale, including detours, challenges and successes. The experiences resulted in benefits to SPS budget as well as potential savings achieved by traditional day students.
Shanna Hollich | Wilson College
Open Licensing and Creative CommonsOER is only made possible through the use of open licensing, most commonly provided through Creative Commons licenses. How does Creative Commons affect copyright? How does open licensing work? This program will provide an overview of what Creative Commons is and how it works; how the Creative Commons licenses interact with existing copyright law; an in-depth look into how the licenses are designed and enforced and what the six different types of CC licenses mean; how to use and share CC licenses and CC-licensed works; and the role that CC licenses have in open textbooks, OER, and open pedagogy.
Dr. Eric Landquist, Dan Stafford & Melody Diehl Detar | Kutztown University, Duquesne University
Open Textbooks: Access, Affordability, and Academic SuccessThe advantages of adopting open educational resources (OERs) are deeper than merely reducing the costs incurred by students. OERs increase the accessibility of higher education and have been shown to improve academic success rates. In this talk, we'll cover motivations for using OERs, how to find potentially suitable OERs for your courses, and explain additional Professional Development opportunities through the Open Textbook Network.
