The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics supports a 22-sport varsity athletic program, comprised of 14 women's sports and 8 men's. All but one sport (women's bowling) compete at the NCAA Division II level in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Women's Bowling competes as an associate member in the Northeast Conference.
Intramurals provide students, faculty and staff the opportunity to compete against others from the Kutztown University Community in a variety of sporting activities. Most leagues have a regular season culminating in a playoff tournament with the winning team taking home the coveted IM Championship prize.

One of the greatest players in Kutztown University football and NCAA Division II history, linebacker John Mobley racked up numerous accolades during an All-America career with the Golden Bears from 1991-95, before going on to earn All-Pro honors and a pair of Super Bowl titles with the Denver Broncos.

Avalanche, the Kutztown University Golden Bear mascot, was unveiled on Saturday, October 1, 2005, at KU's football game against West Chester. Avalanche is named in honor of the nickname of then Kutztown State College's sports teams from the mid-1930s to the early 1960s.

Kutztown University Sports Medicine is committed to practicing the profession of athletic training within the guidelines established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and within the rules and regulations adopted by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Bonita B. Perkins ’68 and Charles O. Perkins ’68 have supported KU through giving for 36 years, including each of the last 21 years. They created the Burke Perkins Endowed Scholarship and contribute to the Ladies Tea Endowed Scholarship, earning their membership in the George B. Hatcher Society at the Kutztown University Foundation.
Cinema and Video Production Equipment: The department currently has multiple HD and UHD 4K cameras to choose from for their production courses and independent studies, both in film and television styles.
Golden Bear athletics experienced unprecedented success during Hawkinson’s tenure, winning six conference championships, the 2023 NCAA Football Super Region One Championship and the 2023 NCAA Division II Field Hockey National Championship, the first NCAA national championship in school history.
