General Education Program and First-Year Seminar
The general education program at Kutztown University is designed to provide students with a foundation of learning in a variety of subject areas. They are the courses that all students take regardless of their major. Students develop a wide range of knowledge from different academic areas and skills in communication, problem solving, critical analysis and cultural awareness. These skills are important to citizenship and career readiness. First-Year Seminar, usually taken in the first semester, introduces the type of academic work expected in college. In a small class, working together with their professor and students from all majors, students explore a topic and learn skills necessary for success at college. Visit our website to learn more about the program, check sheet and approved courses.

    Transfer Student Success Coordinator
Did you know that there is a dedicated staff member at KU to support students with transfer credit? The Coordinator for Student Success and Transfer Engagement, Briana Zdradzinski, is available for individual meetings to assist students with transfer credits, including test credit and dual enrollment credits, with transitioning and acclimating to KU. Prospective and current transfer students can contact Briana to schedule an appointment and learn more on the Transfer Student Engagement page.

Alyssa offers personalized one-on-one meetings to help students identify the most effective strategies for success. Students can email Alyssa to schedule an appointment.

    Kids Art Camps
Summer is the time for local children to come to KU to experience the arts. Our popular Kids Art Camps are taught by KU art education department alumni and assisted by current KU art education students. This is great opportunity for our future educators to mentor under-experienced art teachers and for kids in our community to spend time on campus in our wonderful art building.

    Summer Internships
Summer is a great time for students to get a jump on art internships. We currently have a great intern working in the university art archives matting and framing more than 300 pieces of original etchings from our Alumni Art collection that will be on exhibit at Frontline Arts this fall in New Jersey. Julia Sweeney, class of 2026, is a double major in art history and studio art with a minor in chemistry; she hopes to have a career working in museum conservation.

    Summer Exhibitions
The Sharadin Atrium lobby is now exhibiting select artwork from our Foundation Year classes. These are the classes that all art students take their first year, despite their major. Select artwork from the classes Digital Foundations, 2D, 3D, Drawing I and Drawing II are on display until the second week of September.

Kutztown University Summer Music Festival 2024
This summer, the Kutztown University Summer Music Festival marked its 14th year of existence, a period of growth that brought a high level of student participants from across the United States and an increasing number of international attendees. Participants were attracted to our intensive and unique program of lessons, masterclasses, workshops, chamber music coachings and numerous performance opportunities. With our world-renowned faculty and team of devoted KU alumni as counselors leading the way, the 2024 Kutztown University Summer Music Festival was an extremely rewarding experience for everyone, including audience members from the university and the surrounding community appreciative of the stellar performances offered by the students. Two highlights mark this year’s festival: the new collaboration with the Wells-Rapp Center for Mallet Percussion Research and addition of mallet percussion to the instrumentation, and the concerto competition in both junior and senior divisions. Eleven-year-old pianist Calla Jin from the Manhattan School of Music, winner of the junior category, will be performing with the KU Orchestra during the academic year; and senior division winner, violinist Logan Chiang from New York University, will be performing with the University of Macedonia orchestra in Greece in June 2025.

We believe in helping young and talented musicians achieve their musical goals and maintain the love of collaboration in music throughout their lives, no matter what career path they choose. Thank you to Kutztown University, President Hawkinson and all the staff who helped achieve the success of the 2024 Summer Music Festival.

PASSHE Freezes Tuition Again; Seventh Year at Same Rate
The Board of Governors for Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) voted unanimously to freeze tuition for in-state undergraduate students for the 2024-25 academic year. This is the seventh consecutive year the tuition rate will remain the same at all 10 universities. The repeated freezes save students nearly 25% in tuition costs compared to the price if tuition had risen at the inflation rate for the last six years. Read More

    Student Accounts Office Hours
Fall 2024 hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., effective Monday, Aug. 26.

    Spring/Summer 2024 Balances
Please check Legacy MyKU to ensure all Spring (and Summer) charges are paid to remove any holds that may have been added. Hard holds blocking access to Add/Drop and late fees are being added now for balances greater than three months old. Fall aid cannot pay Spring or Summer charges. MyKU > KU Financial Account tile > Payment Dashboard

    System Conversion Reminder
    Summer and before:

    Fall 2024 and forward:

    Student ID Number Change

    • Legacy MyKU – IDs started with 00 or 000 – nine digits long.
    • New MyKU – IDs start with a P – nine characters long.
    • Students do not need a new ID card.

Payment Provider Change - Credit Card Processing Fee Change
The payment provider is changing from Cashnet to Touchnet. The new provider has a slightly different fee structure for credit cards. Echecks will remain a free way to pay unless returned for any reason (enter bank information carefully and slowly). Credit cards in New MyKU will still be assessed 2.85% as a non-refundable processing fee; however, there will now be a minimum fee of $3 for any credit card charge in New MyKU. The fee for a credit card will be $3 or 2.85%, whichever is greater. If using a debit card, we suggest using the bank information instead.

    Statement/Bill Location
New MyKU > Student Accounts Card > Payment Dashboard. “View On Demand Statement” option will show you the most current up to date, as of that minute statement. The other statements that are listed are just of that moment in time and are not updated.

Stafford Loans – Accept or Decline – New Requirement for All Students
All students must now accept or decline their Stafford loans in New MyKU > Student Self Service > Dashboard > Financial Aid > Award Offer (second tab) > under Loans select Take Action and use the dropdown to accept or decline. Loans will not show until this is completed (3-5 days). Any changes after initial accept or decline must be done on a student loan change form. Financial Aid can lend guidance at 610-683-4077.

    Outside (non-KU) Scholarship Awards
Many students receive scholarships, either as they graduate high school or awards that they renew each year. Student Accounts will not carry these items over year to year. If you have an award that is renewed, please send an updated award letter to our office so we can add a courtesy credit to the statement that can reduce the charges due. We will only add courtesy credits for scholarships of $1,000 or more. Email these award letters to studentaccounts@kutztown.edu.

Any award checks sent to you that are made payable to just the student do not have to come to our office and we don’t need those award letters. Only items that are payable to KU or KU and the student will need to come to our office. Call us with any questions.

Additional Funding Options – Apply for Loans
Many students will need additional funding after their awarded aid package from the FAFSA completion. Some will pay the difference; some will use a payment plan (see below), and some will use additional loans. Additional loans should be applied for quickly as it will take up to two weeks or more for Financial Aid Services to certify loans and allow it to show on the Fall account, thereby reducing the charges due.

    • Alternative Loans are loans in a student’s name with a credit-worthy co-signer (some even have a parent option now). These can take up to two weeks to show as pending aid in MyKU. Don’t delay. You can always reduce these loans before they disburse.
    • Parent PLUS loans are loans in a parent’s name they take to help a student. Approvals and denials (parent denials may offer students some additional Stafford Loans) can take up to two weeks to show as pending on the account.
    • Apply for the full year – so double the cost need for Fall and use the loan period of August 2024 to May 2025. Financial Aid will split loan evenly between fall and spring.

Interest does not start until the funds are disbursed (i.e., September & February). Do not delay, apply for these extra loans. You can easily reduce the loans later by completing a loan change form once the actual charges are on the account and you see all of the figures in one place.

For more information on additional funding options click here. You can also get more information by calling Financial Aid Services at 610-683-4077.

The Difference Between Anticipated and Awarded Aid
Once the FAFSA is completed, an aid package is prepared for a student by Financial Aid Services. This is awarded aid. This aid will not reduce charges on a bill at this point. To move from awarded aid to anticipated aid, students must complete all requirements, such as accepting the loans in New MyKU, verification if selected, Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling (if not already completed at KU), submitted their final high school transcript, be enrolled in courses and lastly, the student must be eligible for aid (financial aid progress). Only aid that is shown as pending or anticipated will be considered as payment towards the charges due. Students can check if they have any outstanding aid items here: NEW MyKU > Student Self Service card > Dashboard > Financial Aid > Federal Tasks.

    Fall 2024 Payment Plans
Payment Plans remain open for the Fall 2024 semester charges until Tuesday, Aug. 13. The three-payment plan is open until Tuesday, Aug. 13. A student can sign up for a plan now and adjust the plan later if charges change. There is no fee to increase or decrease the plans as needed, should a surprise scholarship show up or the bill increase due to a housing change for example. New MyKU > Student Accounts card > Payment Dashboard > Payment Plans.

Authorized Users – Payment Dashboard Access (prior payer access not transferred)
Students can sign their parents up to get their own access to the New Payment Dashboard including getting the statement email notifications as to not solely rely on the students to share their notice. Students go to New MyKU > Student Accounts card > Payment Dashboard > Authorized Users. Payer Access from the old payment dashboard did not transfer to the new system.

    Student Accounts Summer Office Hours
Over the summer we are still available to help you. We recommend email as our preferred method of communication to allow us time to research and review the account for a good answer; however, you may always call us as well at 610-683-4133. We are open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    Address and Email Updates
Now is a great time for students to review their addresses on MyKU and their personal emails. Students can update their mailing address. Home address changes must be done online with a request to the Registrar’s Office. The student must login to do so. We also ask that students review their personal emails so that we have another way to reach them. High Schools often disable those emails after graduation and many students forget to remove these. Please review these today. Emails can be updated right in MyKU. Remember, KU email is our formal method of notification.

    Parking Permits
Parking Permits may be purchased online. Permits are $75 for the full year or $50 for the Fall semester. Students go to New MyKU > Vehicle Services to purchase.

    Parking Ticket Payments Moved
Parking Ticket payments will now be made at New MyKU > Vehicle Services. If you paid a ticket during the summer on Legacy MyKU and it still shows in Vehicle Services as an outstanding ticket, please email StudentAccounts@kutztown.edu for help to update Vehicle Services.

    Student Employment Opportunities
Data shows that students who work on campus remain in college at a much higher rate than other students. Students who work on campus learn valuable skills and earn extra money under flexible schedules that accommodate their class schedules and academic needs, while building strong connections with staff and faculty. Student job opportunities are listed in Handshake. Students working on campus for the first time will need to complete payroll paperwork and background checks and present I-9 documents, so your student will need to bring their original unexpired document(s) to Human Resources before they can begin to work.

KU is a great place for your students to learn and grow, but did you know our beautiful campus is also a great place to work? Eligible employees are offered excellent benefits, career growth and development opportunities and tuition waiver. Current opportunities are listed on our website.

    Emergency Alert Information
The beginning of the new academic year is a perfect time to become familiar with emergency notification methods for our campus. KU’s text message warning system, powered by Omnilert, advises the campus of life-threatening situations as well as weather-related closures and concerns. Each student's primary mobile phone number is automatically registered. Students can customize their accounts to register two cell phone numbers to receive emergency text messages.

    • Returning students: your Omnilert account from last year remains active. You can review and update your account if needed at the link below.
    • New students: your primary mobile phone number and KU email address will be registered automatically to receive emergency texts/emails. You should expect to receive a welcome message Tuesday, Aug. 20. The mobile phone number registered is the one listed at the time of the student’s application (Note, if you did not opt in to receive texts from KU when you applied, you will need to create your account yourself).

Omnilert can be accessed via the KU emergency website at https://www.kutztown.edu/kualert and then follow the link to login and review your account information with your KU credentials. Also, it is important to pay special attention to emails from kualerts@kutztown.edu. This will be the official method of distributing emergency related emails to the KU community.
