Residence Hall Safety & Security

Emergency Equipment
All residence halls and Golden Bear Village South Buildings 10 and 80 are monitored by an alarm system. This system enhances the security of the halls by limiting access to only the residents and their guests. Students are not permitted to exit through an emergency exit in a non-emergency situation. Any student who violates this policy or is suspected of tampering with any fire safety equipment in the residence halls will be will be subject to disciplinary action through the Kutztown University Student Conduct Services and/or PA State law.

Fire Safety
All residence halls are equipped with automatic Fire Alarm Systems. The systems include photoelectric smoke detectors in common areas (corridors, lounges, etc.), mechanical rooms, and special use rooms, as well as in each sleeping area. All fire alarms are monitored at the desk and report to Public Safety and Police Services. All residence halls and apartments are equipped with portable Fire Extinguishers and full Fire Sprinkler Protection. DO NOT tamper with, block, or hang any article or decoration from any portion of the fire sprinkler system or other fire safety equipment. Any student who is suspected of tampering with any fire safety equipment in the residence halls will be will be subject to disciplinary action through the Kutztown University Student Conduct Services and/or PA State law.

Maintenance
The Residence Life staff will conduct periodic room checks to ensure the safety and upkeep of the physical facilities of the residence halls. Students are responsible for the care of the rooms and apartments that they are assigned. However, if you have something in your room or apartment that is in need of repair, please click on the links below to and submit a maintenance request. If there is a concern that the repair was needed due to intentional damage, a Residence Life staff member will review your request to determine if you and/or your roommate are responsible for the damage.
For students living in a Traditional or Suite-Style hall:
Log your request at the Facilities Work Order System- You must enter the request from an on campus location
- You must enter a valid KU student email address
- You may only enter residence hall room maintenance requests

Personal Property and Property Insurance
Resident students are responsible for their personal belongings. Students will not be allowed to store belongings in the residence halls at any time. Kutztown University assumes no responsibility for loss of or damage to personal property, and extends no insurance coverage to indemnify students' property. Residents are encouraged to secure insurance coverage for personal belongings either through their parent's/guardian's homeowners’ insurance company or with a separate renter's policy while living on campus.

Public Safety and Police Services
Public Safety and Police Services is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Residence Life staff works closely with this department to offer educational and safety programs for our residents.

Room Keys and Pin Codes
All doors to the residence halls and Golden Bear Village South Buildings 10 and 80 will be locked at all times. To ensure the safety and welfare of students and the protection of personal property, all residents are required to have a valid Kutztown University student photo ID card. The ID card will permit access to the residence hall. Residents only have access to their hall. Each student will be issued a room key or pin code. Each resident is responsible for their assigned keys and/or pin codes. Any resident who improperly uses and/or abuses these items will be subject to disciplinary action through the Kutztown University Student Conduct Services and/or PA State law. Resident will be charged a monetary fee for the replacement of keys and/or pin codes if necessary.

Safety Escort
Public Safety & Police Services offers an On-Campus Safety Escort, which is available 24 hours a day. To request the escort service, call Public Safety at 610-683-4002 or use any emergency phone.

Student Prevention and Assistance
It is our goal to provide a safe and secure residence hall environment for our students. Ensuring the safety of the University community is a group effort. Please keep the following tips in mind:
- Do not allow strangers to enter the residence hall with you. (No "piggybacking")
- Do not prop open entrances to buildings.
- Notify the staff member on duty if someone has insisted upon entering the hall with you. Observe the offender to get a good physical description and note the direction he or she is walking.
- Lock your room doors at all times - even when you're sleeping, and especially when you're gone.
- Do not leave valuables unattended or unsecure.
- Never lend your KU ID, pin code or room key to others.
- Immediately report a lost or stolen KU ID or room key.
- Report suspicious persons or activities immediately.
