Best Practices - Mailing Items of Value to Campus

Kutztown University would like to remind our students, families and campus community of some best practices when mailing anything of value and processing financial transactions.

Checks contain a lot of your personal information and if in the hands of a criminal, can be used to steal your identity and/or your money. Checks can easily be altered and cashed with the rise of the mobile deposit feature. This can drain your bank account and cause extreme hardship.

10 Best Practices when it comes to money on campus

  1. Online payments are safer than checks in the mail.
  2. Cash apps (also known as money-transferring apps, or peer to peer providers) are a great way to send money to students on campus if needed. Venmo, Paypal, Zelle, CashApp and others are out there.
  3. Avoid mailing cash.
  4. Send mail certified if including anything of value such as cash, checks and gift cards.
  5. Avoid using blue postal boxes.
  6. Do not cash a check from a stranger, or for a stranger.
  7. If it seems to be too good to be true, it is.
  8. Never send money to a stranger who demands it or threatens harm. If need be, alert authorities.
  9. Avoid discussing finances in open areas such as expecting a check in the mail.
  10. Be sure to have a lock on your cell phone and computer and do not leave them sitting around.
