Transfer Mentor
Roles & Responsibilities
Student & Community Development:
- Establish a personal relationship with each transfer resident at the start of the academic year in order to gain an awareness of personalities, attitudes, academic goals, challenges, and health concerns
- Spend the first two weeks of school visiting transfer rooms/suites daily and continue regular visits throughout the academic year
- Help students develop relationships with each other so that a cohesive and respectful community is formed on the floor/transfer area
- Encourage residents to participate in regular floor meetings and programs throughout the year by seeking out their input and tailoring programs to their interests and concerns
- Recognize that it is important to be visible and available to students
- Function as an advocate for students by recognizing the problems, concerns, and opinions of individuals and groups, then present the students’ viewpoints to the appropriate University staff through the appropriate channels (advise and assist students in their efforts to present their views in the most effective and constructive manner)
- Help residents develop respectful relationships with the students who live on their floors and in their building (students should respect other students’ rights with regard to privacy, noise, cleanliness, and other considerations)
- Advise and counsel students within the limits of training and capability in academic, personal, and social matters
- Notify the Community Assistant and Building Director of any roommate conflicts and assist in their mediation
- Develop a strong working relationship with fellow Transfer Mentors, the Transfer Year GSE, Building Directors, and Community Assistants that will be serving the transfers you are assigned to during the academic year
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Serve under the direct supervision of the Transfer Year GSE
- Communicate with the supervisor regularly, via daily contact, weekly team meetings, and regular individual meetings
- Participate in program activities such as: Recruitment, Selection, Fall/Spring Training, and Staff Developments
- Staff members are expected to be present and available for the needs of their transfer residents and the community
- Provide a schedule outlining classes, extra curricular activities, internships, and jobs that must be submitted to the Transfer Year GSE and any changes must be communicated as they arise
- Maintain two office hours per week
- Assist the Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services Office in implementing all ongoing assessment efforts
- Complete one transfer-year focused newsletter per month
- Complete one transfer Issue social media post (video or graphic) per month
- Additional responsibilities and expectations as assigned (primarily determined by, but not limited to, the needs of the staff, resident population, and or the Central Office)
Policies & Responsibilities:
- Uphold University regulations and act as a role model at all times, on and off campus (Each Transfer Mentor should be familiar with University and Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services expectations with regard to all policies, including drugs and alcohol. Mentors are responsible for their own behavior and aware of how it influences the behavior of their peers.)
- Develop an atmosphere in the residence hall in which students have concern and respect for the rights and privileges of others
- Help students develop methods for effective enforcement of rules regarding behavior necessary for an atmosphere conducive to study and community living
- Be available 24 hours a day during the first week of the semester
- The Transfer Mentor will be asked to assist the Central Office during opening
- The Transfer Mentor position begins on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, and ends on Friday, May 16th, 2025 (If a mentor resigns or is terminated from the position during these employment dates, they will not be able to obtain employment with Residence Life, Housing, and Dining Services for the remainder of their contract)
- Leave time must be made in consultation with the Transfer Year GSE
Programming:
- Plan, execute, and evaluate a minimum of 2 transfer-year all-hall programs per semester that focus on academic, personal, and social development
- Plan, execute, and evaluate a minimum of 1 faculty engagement all-hall program per semester that focuses on connecting with faculty
- Plan, execute, and evaluate a minimum of 3 transfer mentor/mentee socials per semester
- All staff will be required to work weekends that involve large events or high activity including, but not limited to, Transfer Move-In Day, Opening Weekend/Welcome Week Activities, Family Day, Homecoming, PAWS, and Bearfest
- Complete one Community Builder per week (15 total for the entire semester)
- Develop a working relationship with the Community Assistants and Building Director in order to develop programming goals for the building and enhance the residential community
Training & Development:
- Transfer Mentors must be available during Fall/Spring Training dates, Transfer Move-in Day, Fall Opening Weekend Activities, and Welcome Week (Training is a 24 hour commitment)
- Continuous Training opportunities will occur throughout the semester
- Transfer Mentors will be required to attend approved continued training opportunities throughout semester.
- There will be a mid-year Evaluation of the Transfer Mentor job performance
- The Transfer Mentor position will follow the staff discipline model (The Assistant Vice President/Executive Director of Residence Life, Housing, and Dining reserves the right to terminate a Transfer Mentor at any time during the year if a Transfer Mentor’s performance is inadequate and contrary to reasonable expectations)
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assist transfer year students’ process and understand information regarding various housing processes including: room selection, housing renewal, opening and closing, and general housing information
- Promote and recruit various Housing and Residence Life paid and volunteer leadership positions
- Promote and support Housing and Residence Life programs
- Promote and support housing organizations including: Residence Hall Association, Hall Councils, National Residence Hall Honorary, Bearfest, and Social Justice Committee
Transfer Mentor QUALIFICATIONS
All selected and placed Mentors must:
- Complete an application and have an interview
- Maintain a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average
- Be in good judicial standing
- Have a paid Housing Application for 2024-2025
- Reside on campus
COMPENSATION
The Transfer Mentor position is a salaried position receiving $4000 for the academic year.
