KU Summer Art Camp 2023

Join us for a summer filled with creative exploration, art making, and adventure. Each week-long program is open to campers entering grades 1-9 and runs the weeks of June 26, July 10, and July 17. Each camp is a full day, 9 am-4 pm! Each camper is encouraged to wear clothing they can get dirty, bring along a water bottle, a packed lunch, and plenty of sunscreen for outdoor exploring!
Camper drop off is in Sharadin Lobby by the fountains (near Gallery)! Pick up is located in the same lobby, and is at 4pm!

2023 Art Camp Programs
Week One: June 26-30
Art Explorers
Jesse Todero, Teacher

Spend five days exploring the art world through various types of techniques, materials, and different activities! We will explore printmaking, nature weaving, natural sculptures, sketchbook making, as well as many other forms of art processes. Get your brains and hands ready for a week filled with immersive art making. Be ready for exploring the world around us and don’t forget your sunscreen and water!
Enchanted Forest

Artists will be immersed in an enchanted forest theme while we work through whimsical art making by practicing different art processes. Explorers will partake in drawing, painting, dyeing, and three-dimensional sculptures, and more for the week! Bring the imagination but don’t forget the sunscreen and water though because we will forage for our materials
in the outside world!
Thinking Outside the Box

Campers will dive into the fine arts world through engaging, hands-on drawing and painting lessons. Experimenting with materials such as paint, ink, sand, watercolor, tie-dye, and so much more, campers will build upon foundational skills and take a step outside of the box by exploring fun and innovative ways to let their creative side shine. No experience with drawing or painting necessary!
Week Two: July 10-14
Natural and Fantastical Worlds

What do you see when you close your eyes? And when you open them? Using our senses, we’ll explore the natural world while walking around the KU campus, and then create artworks inspired by our findings. We’ll also delve into fantastical and magical worlds through mixed media sculptural projects, mask-making, and puppetry, using found and natural materials. This camp will expand your imagination and have you discovering the ways that nature influences artmaking.
Pre-Teen Art Scene
Annie Schnore, Teacher

Join us on a journey of self-discovery through art making! Find your own artistic style through self-expression and creative problem solving. Artists will explore journaling, mixed media, collage, drawing, sunprints, painting, and more. This camp will include a balance of guided open studio time and organized art projects with a heavy emphasis on creative style. Art making doesn’t just happen in the studio! We will be exploring campus and finding inspiration outdoors, so bring your sunscreen and water bottle!
Textile Camp

Expand your horizons in art by exploring different textile processes! Campers will learn different textile techniques and processes from dyeing, weaving, felting, embroidery, and simple sewing projects. When we aren’t in our textile studio we will be outside enjoying outdoor activities and exploring the campus, so make sure to have your sunscreen!
Week Three: July 17-21
Experimental Art Making

During this session of summer camp we will be designing, constructing, and experimenting while making 2D and 3D art. Combining our knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art and math to deepen our connection across subjects. We will be exploring these inclusive disciplines inside and outside the art room so be sure to pack sunscreen and water!
Around the World in 5 Days

Come along as we explore different areas of the world through art in only 5 days! Be prepared to travel quickly through unique types of art processes related to different areas of the world. No matter where we are in our travels, be prepared with your sunscreen and water. and finding inspiration outdoors, so bring your sunscreen and water bottle!
Creative Clay Camp

Get ready to get your hands dirty in Creative Clay Camp! Over the course of our week in the ceramics studio, we will experiment with a variety of hand building techniques including basic pinch pots, slab building, and coiled pottery. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to make pottery on the potter’s wheel! *Please note that due to the nature of the ceramic process (making, drying, firing, glazing, and firing a second time) most, if not all the work you make in this camp will need to be picked up a week or two after the class concludes.
