Chanel Miller to Feature at International Women’s Day Gathering

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In an eagerly anticipated event marking International Women’s Day, Kutztown University proudly announces Chanel Miller, acclaimed author and artist, as the featured speaker 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 218 McFarland Student Union. The gathering is designed to inspire and foster discussions on overcoming adversity through agency and storytelling, rather than solely focusing on women’s rights.

This significant event is sponsored by the Dr. Constance P. Dent and Dr. Ann Gundry Distinguished Speaker series, in partnership with the KU Women's Center and the Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies program, underscoring a community-wide commitment to addressing critical issues and supporting survivors.

Miller holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has become a pivotal figure in addressing sexual assault and the justice system's response to survivors, especially through her memoir, KNOW MY NAME. Her work, a vivid narrative of her experiences and recovery, has received numerous accolades, including being named a New York Times bestseller and a National Book Critics Circle Award winner. Additionally, it has been recognized by Time, the Washington Post and NPR as one of the best books of the year.

Beyond her writing, Miller has significantly influenced the dialogue around gender, consent and healing. Under the pseudonym Emily Doe, she earned the title of Glamour Woman of the Year, symbolizing hope and resilience for sexual assault survivors worldwide. Her achievements have also been acknowledged by Forbes 30 Under 30 and Time’s Next 100 list.

The International Women’s Day event will highlight Miller’s profound message on utilizing personal narrative as a means of healing. It promises to not only honor the progress made in gender equality but also to ignite important conversations on ongoing struggles.

This year’s presentation titled “Harnessing Agency and Storytelling for Healing,” will be a moderated talk by Dr. Colleen Clemens, director of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program. This format aims to provide a deeper understanding of Miller’s journey and the universal power of storytelling in healing and empowerment.
