Hold Expectations

The holds box in MyKU can be confusing to many since it shows both positive and negative holds.  Each of these holds have impacts that can affect a multitude of items such as, but not limited to, registration, receipt of transcripts and diploma, as well as saving classes from removal, or showing that a student has some funding even if not enough to pay the full bill, and more.

Common Holds in our Office:

  • Classes Safe

This means your classes for the semester or session indicated are safe from being dropped. This could be due to an existing payment plan in good standing, pending aid that Financial Aid has notified us of but is not yet showing on your account, military pending funding, employer reimbursement deferments and more.

  • Pending Funds

This means you have some type of funding that is coming but not showing, but it is not enough to cover the full amount due. We are unable to keep the classes safe if this is not sufficient to meet a certain portion of the charges due. This should be an indicator that something more is due out of pocket or more funding is needed.

  • Outstanding Balance

This means you have a small balance that is past due and we are encouraging your attention to this matter.

  • Student Account Warning

This means your account is in warning status and stronger impacts will be imposed shortly if not paid. This hold prohibits transcripts and diplomas.

  • Student Account Seal

This means your account is in collections internally. If the balance is not resolved after a series of collection letters, the account will be forwarded to the PA State Attorney General's Office for collections.  This hold also prohibits future semester or session registration and obtaining transcripts or diplomas.

  • Student Account Collections

This means your account is now placed at one of our collection agencies as listed in the  hold. Payment discussions should be made with this agency. This hold prohibits future semester or session registration and obtaining transcripts or diplomas. The debt must be paid in full with cleared funds before this hold is removed.  Speak to KU collections to determine what cleared means for your method of payment.

  • WO or Write-Off

This means that we have actively ceased collection efforts. This hold prohibits future semester or session registration and obtaining transcripts or diplomas. The amounts that were due, remain due in full. The debt must be paid in full with cleared funds before this hold is removed.

  • FERPA

This means that there is an Authorization to Access Student Records on file by the student for a particular academic year. A student can sign this document and grant permission for a third party, such as a parent, to have access to their records and invoicing information. For more information see FERPA and the Registrar's Office.

  • Advisor Registration Hold

This means the student is prohibited from future semester registration (fall and spring) until they meet with their advisor. The advisor is the one who removes this hold.  For more information please reach out to your advisor.
