Technical Writing

Certificate

The technical writing certificate at Kutztown University is intended to provide students with a solid, 9-credit foundation in technical writing and communication.

Because we live in an era where so much clear, factual information is necessary to drive the world forward, those who master technical writing and communication can apply their expertise in a variety of professional careers.

Writers who can clearly communicate complex processes to diverse audiences in a variety of accessible forms are highly sought after, especially in the health, science, engineering, computer science and finance fields. In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts the demand for technical writers to grow by 8% from 2018-2028, almost double the rate for the average of all occupations.

Required courses include Technical Writing and Communication along with Advanced Technical Writing. From there, students have the opportunity to select one elective in an area of interest and complete the certificate. Electives include Scientific Writing, Copy Editing, Creating User Documentation, Desktop Publishing, and Information Design: Data Visualization.

This certificate is open to both currently enrolled Kutztown University undergraduate students and those outside the university who have completed high school. For more information on starting the technical writing certificate, please contact Dr. Moe Folk or Dr. Michael Downing in the English Department.
