Residency Requirement

Kutztown University has established a policy that full time undergraduate students (less than 60 earned credits) who are not veterans, married or living with parents or a legal guardian with a zip code within a 30-mile radius of Kutztown shall be required to live in a university operated residence hall. Students interested in living off-campus must have earned at least 60 credits, or have lived on campus 2 years at Kutztown University or a previous institution of Higher Education.

For clarification, if you are a current sophomore who will have 60 credits at the end of your current/sophomore year, you do not need to complete a residency requirement exception if you wish to live off-campus for your junior year because the residency requirement will no longer apply to you.

The 60 credit on campus requirement will only be waived for students who commute from their home of record, withdraw from the University, take a leave of absence or choose to study abroad. Students who wish to seek an exception to this policy, within the guidelines listed below, are required to apply for permission to commute daily to campus. This request must be completed on the students MyKUhousing account, by selecting the Residency Exception Request application under the “Forms & Applications” tab. The student will be notified in writing (Kutztown University E-Mail), regarding the status of the request.

In addition to the standard residency requirement exceptions, newly admitted transfer students can be released from the residency requirement if they have 48+ earned credits they will be transferring in, they have completed 4 full semesters at any other post-secondary institution, or if they have obtained their Associate Degree. These reasons for exceptions are only available to newly admitted transfer students. If a student transfers in to the University with less than 48 credits, they will have to wait until they obtain a total of 60 credits or meet another reason for exception before they will be released from the Residency Requirement.  To apply for a transfer-specific residency exception the student must complete the Residency Exception Request application on their MyKUhousing account, this application is found under the “Forms & Applications” tab. On the application, the student will select one of the transfer specific reasons for exception. You will be notified in writing (Kutztown University E-Mail), regarding the status of your request.
