KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Dr. Pierette Kulpa, professor of art history, was awarded Kutztown University’s 2022 John P. Schellenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. The award was presented during the university's Faculty and Staff Convocation and Celebration Friday, Aug. 26.

Kulpa is an avid researcher of the appropriation of art objects for political means and object biography. She received her Ph.D. in art history from Pennsylvania State University, her master’s degree in art history from London’s Courtauld Institute of Art and her Bachelor of Arts in art history and anthropology from the University of Arizona.

She takes special interest in investigating patronage within the 17th-century Roman Curia, the reuse of Renaissance sculptures by Mussolini and the legacy of Michelangelo in the centuries after his death. At KU, Kulpa teaches more than five regularly taught courses that explore art history through different cultures during various periods of time. She has received numerous grants to pursue these studies including the Nevada Arts Council Jackpot Grant, Penn State’s Dissertation Fellowship, a Renato Cevese Scholarship to study Palladio in Vicenza and the Silver Trout Curatorial Award from the Palmer Museum of Art.

Kulpa is co-coordinator of KU’s Italy Study Abroad Program and loves to travel Italy’s scenic landscape.

The John P. Schellenberg Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning was established by John P. Schellenberg, emeriti professor of physical science, faculty alumni and friends to recognize an early career faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding work.
