Alumnus Aids in Donation of Cell Flow Cytometer to Biology Department

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University’s Department of Biology received a state-of-the-art donation of a cell flow cytometer, an advanced cell biology instrument from the pharmaceutical company, Incyte. The donation, valued at $200,000, was initiated by KU alumnus Shane Harvey ’11, who worked with the Wilmington, Del.-based company. Harvey, who earned a Bachelor of Science from KU in 2011, was welcomed back to campus Friday, Feb. 9, by university president Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson. Harvey worked with Incyte to find a new home for its cell flow cytometer. Advanced cytometers are hard to find at undergraduate institutions, as brand-new equipment requires significant investment from universities. The equipment KU received was first purchased in 2016 for $425,000.

Science Olympiad at KU

Science Olympiad needs volunteers. Are you looking for something fun to do over spring break or want to add a little something to your resume? Volunteers are needed to help KU host the CE Regional Science Olympiad Tuesday, March 12 (snow date Wednesday, March 13). The Science Olympiad is a competition held on campus that hosts six middle schools and 26 high schools from nine counties. More than 600 students will compete in approximately 46 events based on science disciplines such as biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. However, we need your help to make all that happen. We need help with registrations, lobby info, food sales/delivery, set-up, scoring, event assistance and so much more. You do not need a science background to be a volunteer. You can judge an event or help with the Appeals Board. To the club advisors, get your club involved. Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Dr. Michael Davis at midavis@kutztown.edu or if you are interested, check out our website at the link below for more information. We look forward to having you as part of the team.
