Sugar Skull! A Día de Muertos Adventure

KU Presents! Family Series opens 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 1 with "Sugar Skull." Join 12-year-old Vita Flores, a first-generation Mexican-American girl who is disconnected from her parents’ culture. When she wants to celebrate Halloween like her friends, her mother insists on celebrating the Day of the Dead. It features authentic Mexican songs and folkloric dances performed by three actors, two dancers and three musicians. See how Vita learns to deal with loss while celebrating the legacy of family members who have left us. KU faculty and staff can access discounted tickets by logging in for tickets with their MyKU log-in.

FDI Scholar Dr. Sotomayor Hosts a Plática

The Frederick Douglass Institute shares with the Kutztown University campus community an exciting event in honor of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. Dr. Sotomayor will facilitate a plática with the cast of the KU Presents! musical theatrical performance "Sugar Skull: A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure," 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, Multicultural Center. Sotomayor and the cast will discuss the bilingual and bicultural performance experience, intergenerational importance and the historical and contemporary significance of the celebration of Día de Muertos in the United States. This hour-long plática will engage an artistic perspective through visual culture, music, language and larger social issues pertinent to marginalized populations in our region and border countries.
