Thesis Presentation on Astronomy and Data Science

Computer Science MS student Nicholas Paolella will present his interdisciplinary thesis research "Identifying The O’Connell Effect in Eclipsing Binary Stars," based on work done under the supervision of astronomy professor Dr. Phillip Reed and computer science professor Dr. Dale Parson 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25, via Zoom (Meeting ID: 936 1203 3210. Passcode: CSresearch), concluding by 11 a.m. The O’Connell effect is an asymmetry of peaks in cyclic light curves for eclipsing binary star systems as captured by recording instruments. This study uses data captured by NASA and curated by Villanova University, enabling the investigation of eclipsing binary stars and their dynamic attributes that help identify the O’Connell effect.
