Patchwork Pedagogy: Art Education Summer Institute Highlights

Dr. Julia Hovanec facilitated an exhilarating and innovative Summer Institute titled, "Patchwork Pedagogy: Using Collage and Assemblage to Reinforce Memory, Create Connection, and Foster Belonging," for the Department of Art Education. Running July 15-18, the institute, which had 21 participants, was packed with engaging encounters, hands-on workshops, inspirational talks and much more. Highlights of the institute included presentations by Michael Albert, Rhonda Wall and Teri Anderson, as well as Kara Mshinda’s collaborative hand collage workshop. We explored the Fabric Workshop and Museum, participating in an engaging workshop and touring two thought-provoking exhibits that challenged our perceptions and sparked our artistic pursuits.

In the Sharadin Art Studio, creativity was in full swing. We immersed ourselves in various encounters, including:

- Introductory Canvas Collage and Assemblage
- Puzzling Collaborative Collage
- Circle Collage and Assemblage
- Collaborative Hand Collage
- Pop-Art Collage

The week was an incredible blend of art-making, collaboration, discussion, inquiry and reflection. Participants left with new skills, a deeper understanding of the importance of memory and fostering belonging, meaningful connections and a greater appreciation for the power of collage and assemblage in art education and personal expression.

Weather

Weather forecasts are provided by KU's Dr. Michael Davis and "Monsoon Mike" Regensburger

A few weak fronts and weak low pressures will keep unsettled, humid weather in the making for us. Mostly cloudy conditions will prevail today with a few scattered rain showers and thundershowers and maybe a downpour or two, but the day will not be a washout. High temperature around 85.
