Dr. Hawkinson Presented Veteran Spirit Award

Kutztown University’s Office of Military and Veterans Services presented the 2024 Veteran Spirit Award to Kutztown University president, Dr. Kenneth S. Hawkinson, at halftime of KU’s Nov. 9 football game and Military Appreciation Day. Hawkinson served honorably in the United States Army. After serving in the Illinois National Guard as a field artillery officer and an executive officer for a field artillery battery, he was called to active duty as an infantry officer. Hawkinson served in Germany as a platoon leader, weapons platoon leader and as a public affairs officer. He also served for two years as a volunteer in the Peace Corps in Mali, West Africa. Hawkinson continues to provide invaluable support and engaged leadership to the Kutztown military, veteran and ROTC community, as well as organizations that serve veterans. Award presentation was made by U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General (Retired) Richard Zilmer, a well-decorated veteran and highly respected class of 1974 alumnus; and Colonel Gregory Adams, a close friend and West Point graduate who had a successful career in field artillery and aviation and who served during the Kuwait and Kosovo military campaigns. Assisting with the presentation were members of the Student Veterans Association and Steel Battalion Army R.O.T.C. Cadets.
