KU's Frederick Douglass Institute Exhibits Professor Anthony Smith Jr.'s "Troping the Colors"

Join us Thursday, March 27, at the Multicultural Center for a bold and thought-provoking art experience that challenges how black identity is portrayed in popular culture. Through a powerful series of textured, mixed-media sculptures, FDI Scholar Anthony Smith, Jr. invites us to examine and disrupt stereotypical narratives with work that is as visually stunning as it is intellectually engaging. Event schedule is as follows:
- 10:30 a.m.: Meet the artist reception - come early to connect with Professor Smith and explore the exhibit up close in an informal networking setting.
- 11 a.m.: Artist Talk and Q&A - hear directly from Professor Smith as he discusses his creative process, themes of representation and the intersections of identity and media. A question and answer session will follow, moderated by FDI Director, Dr. Amber Pabon.
- Noon: Student Reflections and Q&A - FDI Student Scholars Aaliyah Nelson, Devon Looney, Jeremiah Purvis and Munyaradzi “Moon” Mafundikwa will share reflections on attending the gallery show and how it has shaped their perspectives on media, identity and art. The campus community is welcome and can register for the event online.

Visitor from Hildesheim, Germany

Heike Mlakar, lecturer in the English department at Hildesheim University, visited the KU campus recently. In addition to taking a campus tour, visiting classes and getting to know Kutztown and the surrounding area, Mlakar, along with program director Lynn M. Kutch, hosted an information session about the exchange program for prospective students. English major Joseph Lafty, a student participating in the exchange this academic year, joined the group via Zoom. This program (spring semester or full year) is open to students in all majors.

Fair skies return today behind yesterday's system, but it'll be a bit windy again, something we've seen a lot of this month. High around 55 degrees. West winds gusting past 25 mph at times.
